2BF LIQUID OPTICAL WHITENER FOR COTTON & PAPER (C.I.NO.220)

2BF Liquid is liquid optical whitener for paper and gives optimum results particularly in the following application.

USES:

In the mass
- Unsized papers
- Sized papers where the PH of the dilution or white water is above 5.5 with low loading (up to 5% ash content)
In surface coating
- With starch solutions CMC etc.
- With pigmented coatings on a starch latex base.

APPEARANCE SOLUBILITY:

2BF liquid is a clear pale yellowish liquid of low viscosity with a specific gravity of 1.18 It can be diluted with water in all proportions.

The liquid formelimanates a possible source of errors, by dispensing with the process of dissolving with hot water.

Solution of 2BF Liquid is practically unaffected by hard water, stock solutions of up to 10 gm/termain stable for several days if kept in closed stainless containers and way from light. A solution of 1 gm/1 2BF Liquid has a pH of 7-8.

STORAGE: 2BF Liquid remains stable for up to an year kept in a cool, dry Place away from light.

EXHAUSTION/SHADE: 2BF Liquid has a particularly high affinity for bleached cellulose and for the binders used in surface sizing and pigment coating, such as reduced starches, dextrins, CMC and alginates.

2BF Liquid used in the mass gives the best whitening effect in the neutral pH range. The highest affinity for binders in coating slurries occurs at pH 8-9.

The shade of 2BF Liquid applied in the mass is slightly bluish and in surface coating slightly reddish.

FASTNESS/STABILITY: Cationic products can adverely affect the white in varying degrees depending on their composition and preliminary trials should always be carried our check their compatibility with 2BF Liquid.

2BF Liquid has good fastness to light, alkali, acid and chlorine. Stability is good at pH 5.5 and above.

It 2BF Liquid is used in sized and pigmented coating care must be taken to ensure that the pH of the coating base paper is not less than 5.

APPLICATION:

1.	In the mass	The amount required is generally 0.05%-0.3% 2BF Liquid calculated 0 dry substance. The white effect depends on the original whiteness of the bleached cellulose and also of the binder and white pigments used. Solution of 2BF liquid can be added to the beater, hydropuper, mixing chest, or continuously. To obtain the highest yield, the addition should be made in the following order: Pulp Fillers Size 2BF Liquid alum (if possible 10-15 minutes after adding the 2BF Liquid) the maximum white effect is reached at 0.6%.
2.	Surface Coating	(a) In size coatings: The amount required is generally 0.5-5 gm/1 2BF Liq. To improve the printing properties and writing paper size solutions (reduced starches, CMC, etc) are often applied to the surface on the size press or some other device which may or may not be part of the paper machine, for reasons of economy it is advisable in these cases to add the optical whitener of the untreated paper should be as high as possible. For really high whites a small amount of optical whitener needs to be added at the beater stage. To improve the printing properties it is also desirable for the coating slurry to be kept slightly alkaline (pH 8-9) with concentrated ammonia, as this also gives an optimum whitening effect. Maximum whiteness is obtained at 8gm/2BF Liquid (Starch base). (b) In pigmented coating slurries the amount required is generally 0.5-5 gm/1 2BF Liquid: 2BF Liquid is particularly suitable for pigmented coating slurries with a starch/latex base due to its high affinity for the normal range of binders. The quantities required again depended on the basic whiteness of the white pigments and binders, the machine speed, the thickness of the coating and the white effect required. To obtain the maximum quantities of optical whitener can be as high as 12gm/1 depending on the make up of the coating slurry.
